friendship at the
Wondai Regional Art Gallery’s exhibition opening on Friday night

November 3, 2012

Sunshine Coast artist June McCotter enjoyed a reunion with former Wondai Regional Art Gallery curator Alison Iszlaub on Friday night when the Gallery launched its November exhibition, which features works by June and her friends Sarah Lawson, Patti Henderson and Lyla McLaren.

All four artists recently launched their own gallery at the iconic Big Pineapple near Nambour, which is now being restored as a major Queensland tourist attraction after being closed for several years.

This month’s exhibition provides a chance for South Burnett art lovers to inspect the sort of works they’ll see at the Big Pineapple if they decide to pay a visit.

June’s relationship with the Wondai Gallery stretches back to the days when it was founded by Alison Iszlaub in an empty shop diagonally opposite where the gallery now stands.

June was one of the first artists from outside the region to exhibit at the gallery and her relationship with the South Burnett has endured ever since.

But she’s also exhibited throughout south-east Queensland and as far afield as New York, and is a past winner of the Wondai Regional Art Galley Acquisitive which saw one of her paintings added to the Gallery’s permanent collection.

“Art is timeless,” June said, “because it’s the footprint of our society, of the times we live in.”

Her fellow artists in this month’s exhibition work in oils, acrylics, silk, pencil, charcoal, watercolours, spinning, weaving and macrame, and the works on show cover most of these media.

At Friday night’s opening, Gallery curator Elaine Madill was full of praise for both the artists and their children, who are exhibiting works of their own in Kidz Korner.

Ms Madill also said that after some unexpected delays, she hopes the Gallery’s new extension should be open towards the end of this month or early in December, and hopes it will find immediate use among many community groups.

One of these is an amateur musical group which currently meets at the Gallery at 7:00pm every Wednesday night for free music lessons and practice sessions while they wait for the extensions to be completed.

Exhibition: June McCotter & Friends’ “Heart Of Art” exhibition will remain on show at the Wondai Regional Art Gallery from 10:00am to 4:00pm every day until the end of the month.

<table border="0" width="100%" cellspacing="0"
