Members of the Kingaroy Knitting Nannas and the Kingaroy Concerned Citizens Group braved the icy weather on Saturday morning to demonstrate their determination that no new coal mine should be allowed near Kingaroy.<\/p>\n

The group was part of the nationwide “Water4Life” highway protest organised by the Lock The Gate Alliance.<\/p>\n

The event was billed as the “world’s longest protest” with small groups gathering along major highways throughout Australia on Saturday to protest again coal seam gas mining, coal mines and fracking.<\/p>\n

The Kingaroy group set up on the Bunya Highway near the Stuart River.<\/p>\n

One of the Knitting Nannas, Rosemary Pratt, told southburnett.com.au <\/strong>many passing motorists honked their horns in approval as they went past.<\/p>\n

Some also stopped to add their signatures to a petition against Moreton Resources’ proposed open cut coal mine between Coolabunia and Goodger.<\/p>\n

The various Water4Life protest groups posted on social media throughout the morning under the hashtag #water4life with hundreds of photos from Perth to Cairns appearing on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.<\/p>\n

A Lock the Gate spokesperson said the aim of the protests was to put water on the national agenda ahead of the Federal Election.<\/p>\n
