Residents in Tingoora and Cherbourg will soon get faster 4G data services when Telstra install new ‘small cell’ base stations in both towns … voice calls will come later<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Tingoora and Cherbourg will soon get faster mobile 4G data coverage.<\/p>\n

Telstra are installing 135 small-cell base stations so that rural and regional communities around Australia can access its 4G network.<\/p>\n

A “small cell” is a miniature version of a standard base station that is traditionally used to boost coverage and capacity in densely populated urban areas.<\/p>\n

Telstra says it has reworked the technology to use small cells to deliver 4G data services.<\/p>\n

At present the small-cell technology can provide data services only, but Telstra are working on implementing Voice over LTE technology which will allow customers to also make voice calls using 4G.<\/p>\n

The small cell upgrade is being funded solely by Telstra.<\/p>\n

Telstra Group MD of networks, Mike Wright, said the rollout was part of Telstra\u2019s commitment to expand its 4G coverage to 99 per cent of the Australian population by June 2017.<\/p>\n

“We know how important high-speed mobile can be to supporting local communities and businesses,” he said.<\/p>\n

“The growing use of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets is changing the way we live.<\/p>\n

“The introduction of fast 4G data services via a small cell in these locations will mean residents will be able to access social media and video on the go for the first time, as well as increased opportunities for local businesses.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
