The South Burnett’s history looks set to be defined by historic homesteads, iconic churches and majestic halls.<\/p>\n

But it will also be defined by defunct bank branches, long-gone butter factories, a string of hotels and Kingaroy’s peanut silos.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, the South Burnett Regional Council released a proposed list of 77 sites across the region that it would like to include in a local Heritage Register.<\/p>\n

Some – like the Kingaroy peanut silos and the Shepherd Memorial Church Of St Peter at Proston – are already included on the State Heritage Register, but a listing there does not prevent them being listed in a local Heritage Register as well.<\/p>\n

At last Wednesday’s Council meeting, Property portfolio chair Cr Terry Fleischfresser flagged the Council was now obliged to compile a regional Heritage Register by the State Government\u2019s Heritage Act.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Heritage places could include buildings, structures, cemeteries, archaeological sites, gardens, urban precincts and natural and landscape features, he said.<\/p>\n

Once a site was included in the register, most changes proposed to it were regarded as development and would require approval before any work could be undertaken.<\/p>\n

However, exemption certificates could be issued for low-impact development work, conservation work or simple projects that did not affect the heritage values of a place.<\/p>\n

Cr Fleischfresser said once the initial list of proposed sites was published, local residents could make submissions if they believed an important heritage site had been overlooked.<\/p>\n

One-on-one meetings will also be held in Murgon and Wondai on July 14, and in Kingaroy and Nanango on July 15, to explain the process.<\/p>\n

Submissions will be accepted up to Friday, July 22 and the final Heritage Register is expected to be adopted at the Council’s September meeting.<\/p>\n
