Cherbourg is gearing up for a big day of activities on Tuesday, July 5, as part of this year’s NAIDOC Week activities.<\/p>\n

The Ration Shed Museum complex will be the focus of the fun, with a free\u00a0 barbecue, weaving, music,\u00a0 film screenings and cultural dancing.<\/p>\n

The day will kick off about 10:30am and all South Burnett residents are invited to attend.<\/p>\n

NAIDOC Week is held across Australia every July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.<\/p>\n

The word “NAIDOC” originally stood for “National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee”. This committee formerly organised national activities during NAIDOC Week and its acronym has since become the name of the week itself.<\/p>\n

The theme of this year’s NAIDOC Week is ‘Songlines<\/a><\/strong>‘.<\/p>\n

Cherbourg residents will also have the opportunity to check up on their health during NAIDOC Week.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A health expo will also be held on July 5 in Cherbourg, with free health checks including blood glucose levels, blood pressure, haemoglobin and weight.<\/p>\n

There will also be an opportunity for people to have their blood taken and urine tested.<\/p>\n

Genette Simpson, from the Cherbourg Community Health Service, said the health expo was growing in popularity each year.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe health expo is a good chance for people to get a free, quick and easy check over by health workers,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe expo is held each year during NAIDOC Week, in collaboration with other local services including the Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council and The Ration Shed Museum.\u201d<\/p>\n

The day will also include information and free resources from other health and community service providers, a free barbecue lunch and kid\u2019s activities.<\/p>\n

The expo will be held at the Cherbourg Community Health Service campus, Fisher Street, from 10:00am to 2:00pm.<\/p>\n
