The 95th birthday of the Inverlaw Hall was celebrated in style on Saturday night with visitors coming from all over the local district for a special supper dance.<\/p>\n

Hall committee president David Muller – who also plays keyboard at the monthly dances – said the hall traces its history back to 1914 when a group of local farmers formed a co-op.<\/p>\n

“Once a month they would ride to Four Mile Gully to meet, always on a full moon so they could see (there’s no batteries on horses),” he joked.<\/p>\n

This co-op decided to build a hall … so they did. It was opened in June 1921.<\/p>\n

Over the years, the Inverlaw Hall became the heartbeat of the local community, a focal point for the families from Inverlaw, Wattle Grove and Benair.<\/p>\n

“In the 30s, there were footraces outside, tennis games, the pictures and even a play,” David said.<\/p>\n

The regular dances died off a bit in the 1960s, but were revived when the present committee took over in 1983-84.<\/p>\n

“Since then we have had found grants to line the hall, clad the hall, build toilets … worth about $70,000,” David said.<\/p>\n

South Burnett mayor Keith Campbell, who grew up nearby and attended many functions at the hall over the years, said Council made a contribution towards the public liability costs, but everything else was done by the hall committee.<\/p>\n

“It is very good that we have a committee that rolls up its sleeves – and doesn’t get paid for it – to get things done,” he said.<\/p>\n
