SBRC workers Grant Perry and Murray Beitzel were hard at work on Wednesday building swinging safety gates for a newly-sealed section of the Rail Trail at Recreation Drive in Memerambi<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Work on sealing the Kingaroy-Murgon Rail Trail has begun.<\/p>\n

In the last few days, bitumen sealing started in the area between Memerambi and Wooroolin, and a link between the two towns which can be used by the public is expected to be completed soon.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, Council workers began to construct swinging gates on both sides of Recreation Drive.<\/p>\n

The gates are being built as a safety precaution to prevent cyclists or joggers accidentally running on to the road and into the path of oncoming traffic.<\/p>\n

Similar safety gates or chicanes will also be erected at other points along the trail where local roads and highways cross the former railway line.<\/p>\n

While the Wooroolin-Memerambi section is likely to be the first to open, the full 42km project isn’t expected to be finished until the later part of the year.<\/p>\n

And it will have to wait until the October long weekend for its “official” opening.<\/p>\n

Natural Resources portfolio chair Cr Kathy Duff and a community group are planning to hold the official opening celebration as part of this year’s South Burnett and Cherbourg On Show long weekend festival.<\/p>\n

The Rail Trail’s construction costs are being paid for with a $1.4 million grant from the State Government.<\/p>\n
