matched

April 19, 2016

Gunners’ First Division side proved too strong for Wests in the fourth round of this year’s South Burnett Football League competition when the two teams met in Kingaroy on Saturday.

The purple and golds triumphed over their rivals 2-1 in a fiercely fought match that saw the Gunners recover from a Wests goal in the first half with two of their own in the second half.

The last time the two teams met was in the first round of this year’s competition in mid-March.

On that occasion, Gunners walked away from the park with a sound 5-nil victory.

But Wests have clearly improved during the last four weeks, and will be an interesting side to watch as the season progresses.

In Second Division, the two teams proved more evenly matched, battling it out to a 1-all draw.

In this case, it was Gunners who showed improvement.

Last time they met, Wests had taken the big points with a 2-1 win.

But in what was almost a repeat of their last encounter, Wests women were all over the Gunnettes, soundly trouncing their opponents 6-2.

Again, Gunnettes showed improvement over the 5-nil thrashing they received from Wests women last time, and no doubt they will be keen to keep on lifting their game as the season unfolds.

* * *

The Panthers took out the 2nd Division match against Barambah 3-1, but the northerners were not disgraced; Barambah men often have to double up to field a 1st Division side

In Wondai, Nanango’s Panthers gave Barambah a clawing, winning all three divisions by large margins.

To be fair, Barambah men are suffering the same player shortage they suffered last season.

This is forcing a number of their 2nd Division players to play in 1st Division as well – a brutal regimen that naturally shows in the side’s results.

So it was not surprising that in Saturday’s First Division clash, the Panthers walked away comfortable 10-nil winners over a clearly exhausted Barambah.

But in Second Division – which was played earlier in the day – the competition was tighter and probably a truer measure of Barambah’s strength.

While the Panthers won this too, the margin was a much tighter 3-1 and the play was more evenly matched.

Much the same also applied in the Women’s Division, where the ferocious Nanango side scored a 4-1 victory over Barambah, but not easily.

<figure id="attachment_142331" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-142331" style="width: 740px"
