A small group of Nanango residents and RSL members gathered at the town’s War Memorial on Saturday to honour the service of Australian soldiers in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n

“Operation Slipper” ran from 2001-14 and is Australia’s longest war.<\/p>\n

More than 26,000 Australian military personnel served during the conflict;\u00a0 41 soldiers died and more than 260 were wounded.<\/p>\n

The Nanango War Memorial now bears a plaque to honour this sacrifice, as well as a plaque to honour the Australian military personnel who have served in international peace-keeping, mentoring and humanitarian missions.<\/p>\n

The ceremony and wreath-laying were organised by the Nanango RSL Sub-Branch.<\/p>\n

The Afghanistan ceremony on Saturday was the second major RSL event to occur in the South Burnett during the past fortnight.<\/strong><\/p>\n

On March 12-13 the Kingaroy-Memerambi RSL Sub-branch hosted the 97th annual general meeting of the Wide Bay and Burnett District Branch.<\/p>\n

The District consists of 10 RSL Sub-Branches from Rockhampton to Kingaroy.<\/p>\n

The AGM was officially opened by South Burnett Deputy Mayor Keith Campbell after a wreath-laying ceremony held at the Kingaroy War Memorial.<\/p>\n

The sound of the Last Post echoed across the catafalque, blending with the music coming from the Wine & Food In The Park Festival being held elsewhere in Memorial Park.<\/p>\n

On Saturday evening, a dinner for delegates was held at the Kingaroy RSL Club, the first function to be hosted in the Tobruk Room since its recent major renovations.<\/p>\n

The AGM was chaired by the Acting President of the District Branch, Brian Tidyman.<\/p>\n
