This year’s Nanango Mardi Gras street parade drew a near-record crowd<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Cr Barry Green has congratulated Nanango on its support for last Saturday’s annual Mardi Gras, saying he was “overwhelmed” by the positive comments the 43-year-old Festival has received.<\/p>\n

Cr Green – who headed this year’s Mardi Gras committee – said at Wednesday’s South Burnett Regional Council meeting that in his 10 years of personal association with the event he’d never seen such a high level of community involvement and support for the Festival.<\/p>\n

He attributed the change in attitude to the festival being removed from local government control and returned to a community committee.<\/p>\n

“When I was with Nanango Shire Council, the Council sort of took over the festival and ran it for many years,” he said.<\/p>\n

“But since it’s been returned to being run by the community, interest and involvement levels have shot up dramatically.”<\/p>\n

Cr Green said he thought the amount of effort that Nanango residents had put into the Mardi Gras this year was remarkable.<\/p>\n

He said he wanted “to put on record” his thanks to all the volunteers, major sponsor Heritage Building Society Nanango Community Branch and all other sponsors who’d contributed money, goods and time towards it, as well as the Nanango parks and gardens crew for their work in helping to set up the Mardi Gras and clean up afterwards.<\/p>\n

“You only had to look at the crowds that turned out to watch the street parade to see how much the Nanango community backed this event,” he said.<\/p>\n
