Cherbourg has come home with the boys’ trophy after defeating Redlands 7-5 in the grand final of the Bunburra indigenous Beach Touch Football competition on the Gold Coast at the weekend.<\/p>\n

Fourteen young touch footballers from Murgon State High School represented Cherbourg at Surfers Paradise.<\/p>\n

\u201cBunburra\u201d is a Yugambeh word meaning \u201cbeach\u201d. The competition is part of PCYC Queensland’s Sport and Culture Corroboree Event Series and is organised in\u00a0conjunction with Touch Football Australia.<\/p>\n

Twenty teams from 10 regions took part and as well as touch football, there were a lot of cultural activities for the teenagers to enjoy.<\/p>\n

Last year – the first year of the competition – the Cherbourg boy\u2019s team made it through to the final only to lose in a nailbiter to Bundaberg.<\/p>\n

This year they went one better …<\/p>\n

The boys played five matches, winning four and drawing 7-all with last year’s winners Bundaberg.<\/p>\n

The girls competed in four matches, winning two but unfortunately not earning enough points to make it into the finals.<\/p>\n

The girls’ competition was won by the team from Logan who defeated South West in the grand final.<\/p>\n

To earn selection, the players must have a good school attendance record, be active in the community, be responsible and stay out of trouble.<\/p>\n

Boys’ team:<\/strong> Bronson Fogarty, Barry Tapau-Fewquandie, Peter Langton, Rodney Byers, Errol Simpson, Kacey Lynas and Orlyn Fisher.<\/p>\n

Girls’ team:<\/strong> Bailey Lindenberg, Jayda Fisher, Shontae Saltner, Ivana Fuller, Madelaine Blair, Zali Chambers, Jamia Hopkins and Tyla Henningson.<\/p>\n
