ACCC Agricultural Commissioner Mick Keogh<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Australian Farm Institute executive director Mick Keogh has been appointed the inaugural Agricultural Commissioner at the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.<\/p>\n

The appointment to lead the ACCC\u2019s Agriculture Enforcement and Engagement Unit was announced on Wednesday morning by Federal Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce.<\/p>\n

Mr Joyce said the appointment fulfilled a promise in the government’s Agricultural Competitiveness White Paper.<\/p>\n

“What this does it shows our belief in making\u00a0sure that people are treated\u00a0fairly,” Mr Joyce said.<\/p>\n

“Right from my start in\u00a0politics, it’s always been the\u00a0issue that the smaller farmer,\u00a0the person who feels that he\u00a0has the numbers against him and\u00a0the weight against him, wants\u00a0to be treated fairly.<\/p>\n

“Over and\u00a0over again these issues\u00a0are brought forward, have been\u00a0brought forward to me as a\u00a0Senator, brought forward to me\u00a0also as a Minister, and now, we\u00a0have the capacity to assist in\u00a0their resolution.<\/p>\n

“Mr Mick Keogh\u00a0is a person who’s had a lot of\u00a0experience with the NSW farmers, also in the (Australian) Farm Institute.<\/p>\n

“He’s well respected in the\u00a0industry, he is a cattle\u00a0producer himself so he has a\u00a0very good understanding of the\u00a0corporate knowledge required,\u00a0as well as a very good\u00a0understanding of the\u00a0complexities in some of these\u00a0policy spaces.”<\/p>\n

Mr Joyce said Mr Keogh had “deep knowledge” of how the industry actually works and would be able to\u00a0 identify anti-competitive, anti-market issues and inherent\u00a0unfairness in deals.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mr Keogh was raised on a farm in southern NSW and for many years worked as an agribusiness consultant and researcher.<\/p>\n

He obtained a Bachelors degree in Wool and Pastoral Science at the University of NSW in 1980 and completed a Masters degree in 1984.<\/p>\n

In 1992, he joined the NSW Farmers\u2019 Association. As General Manager of Policy, he worked on issues affecting farmers\u00a0at State and federal levels.<\/p>\n

In 2003, he was appointed Executive Director of the Australian Farm Institute.<\/p>\n

The Queensland Farmers\u2019 Federation congratulated Mr Keogh on his appointment but warned he would need to address the self-regulated supermarket “Code Of Conduct”.<\/strong><\/p>\n

QFF CEO Ruth Wade said she looked forward to working with Mr Keogh in identifying and dealing with competition and fair trading issues.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has a long history of researching and analysing issues relating to Australian agriculture and he has a deep understanding of the issues that impact on farmers\u2019 returns and the impediments to improving those returns,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince the establishment of the Agriculture Enforcement and Engagement Unit we have seen an increased interest from the ACCC in listening directly to people within industry who better understand the unique challenges they face around competition and consumer relations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe ACCC Agriculture Enforcement and Engagement Unit visited QFF late last year to listen to each of our industry members outlining issues facing farmers and primary producers.<\/p>\n
