It looks like the 2012 South Burnett Relay For Life will reach its target of $85,000 raised for the Cancer Council after another massive all-night effort in Kingaroy at the weekend.<\/p>\n

Organising committee spokesperson Rowena Dionysius said this afternoon that the 2012 South Burnett Relay For Life had raised $81,107.78 so far … but more will be banked in coming weeks as promised donations to teams roll in.<\/p>\n

Thirty teams took part in the 2012 Relay.<\/p>\n

They gathered at the speedway track in Kingaroy Showgrounds on Saturday afternoon, dressed as pirates, hula dancers, super heroes, doctors and nurses … in fact, just about anything you could imagine.<\/p>\n

After the opening ceremony, survivors and carers walked a special lap of the track to much applause from spectators before all the walkers joined in the relay.<\/p>\n

The walkers were entertained over the hours with live music and other entertainment while the Lions Club manned the canteen.<\/p>\n

At sunset, the walkers paused for a Candlelight Ceremony organised by St Patrick’s School, Nanango,\u00a0in memory of friends and family members who had lost their fight against cancer.<\/p>\n

The relay continued all night before coming to an official close at 8:30am on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Rowena said she was overwhelmed by the support from the South Burnett community for the Relay For Life.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the opening ceremony on Saturday, she said the walkers faced an amazing 18 hours ahead of them.<\/p>\n

“It is a life-affirming journey representing a day in the life of someone fighting cancer, a disease that never sleeps,” she said.<\/p>\n
