{"id":130881,"date":"2015-12-21T18:39:26","date_gmt":"2015-12-21T08:39:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=130881"},"modified":"2020-10-30T12:36:52","modified_gmt":"2020-10-30T02:36:52","slug":"timely-food-safety-tips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2015\/12\/21\/timely-food-safety-tips\/","title":{"rendered":"Timely Food Safety Tips"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aRVopQ8R4pc?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"740\" height=\"440\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>December 21, 2015<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Queensland Health says people are at risk of food poisoning this Christmas because they lack even the most basic knowledge when it comes to food safety.<\/p>\n<p>Health Protection Executive Director Sophie Dwyer said the research revealed 75 per cent of people thought they understood safe food practices \u2013 but Queensland Health statistics on food poisoning painted a very different picture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are really overestimating their knowledge of basic food hygiene, and suffering as a result,\u201d Ms Dwyer said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re telling us that it\u2019s common sense \u2013 but when questioned, only 1 per cent of the 1563 people surveyed knew that eggs should never be washed before cooking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s because washing them makes it easier for any bacteria to get inside the egg from the shell.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cOnly 21 per cent realised washing uncooked chicken was a health risk, with one in five reporting they always washed chicken before cooking it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s alarming because washing raw chicken can spread Campylobacter via splashing water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCampylobacter is the most common cause of food poisoning in Australia, with more than 3200 people getting so ill last year that they ended up receiving hospital treatment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother fact people should be aware of this festive season is that when it comes to those leftovers lurking in the fridge, it\u2019s not recommended they be consumed after two days.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Queensland Health says people are at risk of food poisoning this Christmas because they lack even the most basic knowledge when it comes to food safety.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":282882,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[172,3],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
