Visitors to South Burnett libraries have enjoyed a\u00a0 festive bonus recently with surprise visits by a group of keen carollers.<\/p>\n

The singers, lead by teacher Sue Dowideit-Reiger are all Kingaroy State High School students who have voluntarily given up their school holidays to help spread Christmas cheer at local libraries.<\/p>\n

Accompanied by South Burnett Mayor Wayne Kratzmann, Deputy Mayor Keith Campbell and Cr Ros Heit, the choir visited Kingaroy Library on Monday to entertain a large group of library “regulars” called together by librarian Helen Swendson for a special catch-up.<\/p>\n

The “regulars” were all members of one of the 10 or so special interest groups who meet at the library, including card and scrabble players, book club and family history club members, Spanish lesson students and members of the Kingaroy Computer Users Group.<\/p>\n

After being serenaded by the students, the library users were each presented with a small Christmas gift by Cr Heit.<\/p>\n

But they didn’t get to keep them (at least initially) …<\/p>\n

Mrs Swendson began a game of “pass the parcel” which meant the residents had to swap parcels to the left or the right in a hilarious (and confusing) game which tested their reflexes.<\/p>\n

The groups that meet at the library are popular with residents of all ages, and provide an opportunity for people to make new friends.<\/p>\n

Holiday Activities At SBRC Libraries<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Summer Reading Club program for school students started on Monday.<\/strong><\/p>\n

All registered club members can get a free activity pack from their local library which contains lots of activities and puzzles as well as a colouring competition.<\/p>\n

The packs come in three levels: Secondary, Primary and Preschool.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s theme is \u201cLost Worlds\u201d.<\/p>\n

Children can register to join the Summer Reading Club either on the club\u2019s website<\/a><\/strong> or by visiting a local library.<\/p>\n

To be part of the Summer Reading Club, students need to be a library member.<\/p>\n

Membership to South Burnett Libraries is free upon proof of current residential address and name. Children under the age of 18 require a parental\/guardian signature.<\/p>\n

              Author’s Talk:<\/strong><\/p>\n

              Local author Errol Bishop was the principal at Macleay Island School in Moreton Bay when he first heard about the legend of a 17th century shipwreck, known locally as the Stradbroke Island Galleon. This story inspired his book Ghost Galleon. The novel is a speculative tale about The Andorinha.<\/p>\n
