To help celebrate “Happy Tails Day<\/a><\/strong>” , the RSPCA parked an EMU at Kingaroy Shoppingworld today …<\/p>\n

An Education Mobile Unit, that is.<\/p>\n

The EMU is a large semi-trailer outfitted with hands-on, \u00a0interactive displays that allow visitors to learn all about animal welfare and responsible pet guardianship.<\/p>\n

There’s a section devoted to companion animals, set up like a mini vet’s surgery. Even the toys are microchipped!<\/p>\n

There’s also an area about native animals. Did you know that if you find an injured native animal on the road, you can ring 1300 ANIMAL \u00a0(1300-264-625) to get assistance from the RSPCA?<\/p>\n

RSPCA senior education officer Daryl Joy said the organisation receives more than 200,000 phone calls every year about animal welfare issues.<\/strong><\/p>\n

There’s also a small display in the EMU truck about humane consumerism, ie what to look for when buying eggs, chicken meat etc.<\/p>\n

The van will be at Shoppingworld again tomorrow (October 6) until noon.<\/p>\n

There are vouchers available that offer reduced price desexing of pets between October 1 and December 28 this year.<\/p>\n

The vouchers can be used at Kingaroy Veterinary Surgery (corner Youngman and Avoca streets, Kingaroy) or Barambah Veterinary Surgery (163 Youngman Street),<\/p>\n

But don’t worry if you can’t make it into the EMU tomorrow, the vouchers are also available at these two vets, the RSPCA Shelter at Kingaroy Airport, and at any South Burnett Regional Council office.<\/p>\n

Environment portfolio chair\u00a0Cr Kathy Duff said pet owners could save up to $25 by using the vouchers.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to encourage pet owners to desex and microchip their animal and register them with Council,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Council issues dog and cat registration renewals every 12 months.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe RSPCA service is timely given that Council\u2019s pet registration renewal notices are currently being issued,\u201d Cr Duff said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
