Construction has begun on the new North Burnett Disaster Management Co-ordination Centre at Gayndah Airport, promised after the disastrous 2013 floods.<\/p>\n

Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack said the Federal Government had invested over $1.1 million to fully fund the project under the Community Development Grants Program.<\/p>\n

Federal Member for Flynn Ken O\u2019Dowd said local company Possco Homes had been awarded the successful tender.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe building will adjoin the existing airport waiting terminal, which will be upgraded for use by both the public and the media in times of disaster,\u201d Mr O\u2019Dowd said.<\/p>\n

\u201cDesigned to include co-ordination\/control rooms, meeting rooms, personal accommodation and amenities, the building will also be available for use by organisations such as the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services for vital training purposes.\u201d<\/p>\n

North Burnett mayor Don Waugh said the centre would also include an aviation fuel facility.<\/p>\n

\u201cLocated on land adjacent to the Gayndah airstrip, the complex is ideally positioned to coordinate operations throughout the North Burnett, and will host state-of-the-art equipment to assist in managing disaster events\u201d Cr Waugh said.<\/p>\n

Works are scheduled for completion in early 2016, weather permitting.<\/p>\n
