Cherbourg’s annual “Golden Oldies” gathered again at the weekend to celebrate, have fun and swap stories.<\/p>\n

Golden Oldies is for the over-50s only. It began at Cherbourg 25 years ago when some elders in the community decided they were tired of only catching up with old friends at funerals.<\/p>\n

They decided to organise an event once a year to celebrate life and friendship.<\/p>\n

There’s always lots of music, dancing, food and plenty of reminiscing.<\/p>\n

People born in\u00a0Cherbourg – or with links to the community – come from all over Queensland and NSW for the weekend of events.<\/p>\n

Each year usually has a theme, but this year, the organisers invited visitors to pick their favourite theme from past years.<\/p>\n

Saturday’s activities in the Welfare Hall kicked off with a performance by the Wakka Wakka dancers followed by singing and dancing by members of the Samoan Queensland rugby league team who were visiting Cherbourg to play a “friendly” against the Cherbourg Hornets.<\/p>\n

The players sang a couple of songs and then performed an energetic war dance … possibly part of a cunning plot by the Hornets to wear them out before they hit the paddock!<\/p>\n

The weekend wound up with a breakfast on Sunday morning at The Ration Shed.<\/p>\n
