The South Burnett’s Meandu coal mine has been named one of just four finalists in the “Best Coal Mine of the Year” category in the 2015 Australian Mining Prospect Awards.<\/p>\n

And two Meandu workers are finalists in other categories in the prestigious awards.<\/p>\n

Asset Manager for Mining Operations Jim Young, who has been at the mine since 1983, is one of five finalists in the Contribution to Mining category (he is competing against iron ore billionaire Gina Rinehart!).<\/p>\n

And Meandu mining engineer Tareq Van Oostrom is one of six finalists in the Young Achiever Award.<\/p>\n

Meandu Mine supplies coal to the Tarong and Tarong North power stations.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the mine itself and Jim and Tareq to be in the running as the very best in Australian coal mining in 2015 is an amazing result, win, lose or draw,\u201d Meandu mine manager Simon Ewart said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing a finalist in these Australia-wide awards is a great achievement for our whole team since it recognises that we are one of the best coal mines in Australia.\u201d<\/p>\n

The final winners of the Australian Mining awards will be announced in Sydney on October 30.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have always known that Jim Young is a great mining professional and a great gentleman,\u201d Simon said.<\/p>\n

“Now the whole Australian coal-mining industry will know it.”<\/p>\n
