The local soccer community is in shock following the death of a young SW Qld Thunder player in a car crash in Toowoomba late on Friday night.<\/p>\n

Lachlan Percy, 17, played in the Thunder’s Youth Men’s team and made his debut with the Thunder’s Senior men’s team last year.<\/p>\n

Several South Burnett residents play for the Thunder in various grades.<\/p>\n

Lachlan was a team-mate at the Thunder of former Wests player Sam Gray, who is currently recovering from surgery for a depressed skull fracture suffered when he headed a ball in a recent game.<\/p>\n

Both played in the Thunder\u2019s Youth Men\u2019s team, coached by Lachlan’s father Dan.<\/p>\n

Initial police investigations say Lachlan and two friends, aged 19 and 21 – also believed to be connected with the Thunder – were travelling southbound on the New England Highway about 12:20am when their vehicle left the road, slid sideways and hit a tree.<\/p>\n

The incident occurred on Blue Mountain Heights.<\/p>\n

The trio had attended the Thunder’s end-of-season awards presentation earlier in the night.<\/p>\n

“South West Queensland Thunder are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of talented youth footballer Lachlan Percy,” the club said in a statement.<\/p>\n

“Two other occupants of the car were injured in the accident and are currently being treated for their injuries in hospital.<\/p>\n

“Lachlan was a prominent and well-respected member of Thunder\u2019s Youth Men\u2019s team and made his debut with the Senior Men\u2019s team in 2014.<\/p>\n

“SWQ Thunder requests that media respect the privacy of all families involved at this difficult time.<\/p>\n

“The club extends their sincere condolences to Dan, Terri, Jack and Cameron and to the Lister and Purcell families.”<\/p>\n

Police have appealed for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800-333-000.<\/strong><\/p>\n
