$100 million worth of work will be undertaken at Tarong and Tarong North power stations over the next 12 months<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Contractor UGL has begun hiring for Stanwell’s upcoming $100 million maintenance program at the Tarong and Tarong North power stations.<\/p>\n

The scheduled overhaul of Unit 4 at Tarong will begin on October 24 and run until November 29.<\/p>\n

This will be followed by work on the mothballed Unit 2 from January 18 to February 26 next year, including the installation of a new turbine. This will be in preparation for Unit 2 possibly coming back on line in March, subject to market conditions.<\/p>\n

Tarong North’s single unit will be shut down from April 30 next year to June 11. This major overhaul is expected to include the installation of a new rotor and other turbine components to bring the generating unit back to its full output.<\/p>\n

The next major job on Stanwell’s shutdown schedule is an overhaul of Unit 1 from October 8 to November 13 next year.<\/p>\n

This is the first time that UGL has taken charge of the regular unit shutdowns at Tarong Power Station.<\/p>\n

It plans to hire riggers, laggers, boilermakers, welders, electrical fitters \/ mechanics, mechanical fitters, sheet metal workers, scaffolders and instrumentation and control technicians for the work.<\/p>\n

UGL Project Manager Danny de Raadt said available work would be offered to South Burnett residents first.<\/strong><\/p>\n

However, they must have have relevant qualifications and experience at working at a power station during the past two years.<\/p>\n

Successful applicants may also have the opportunity of working on other UGL projects at non-Stanwell power stations and other large engineering projects across Queensland.<\/p>\n

Shutdown overhauls at power stations are performed by specialised contractors who move between various power stations throughout the year.<\/p>\n

The four units at Tarong Power Station and the single unit at Tarong North undergo\u00a0a major overhaul every four years; Tarong North also has a mini-overhaul every two years.<\/p>\n

Shutdowns always provide a major economic boost to the South Burnett, with hundreds of visiting workers filling local accommodation.<\/p>\n
