Pedestrian and pedal power were the focus of Road Safety Week at Kilkivan State School recently when Adopt-a-Cop Acting Sergeant Llew O\u2019Brien dropped in to speak with students.<\/p>\n

Acting Sgt O\u2019Brien spoke to students about the importance of road safety for everyone; not just drivers of motor vehicles, but also pedestrians and cyclists.<\/p>\n

A team of students from the Kilkivan State School will be competing in the RACQ Technology Challenge in Maryborough on September 12-13.<\/p>\n

For the past 12 months they have been training for the Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) Championship, a keenly contested part of the annual Technology Challenge.<\/p>\n

Teams design a pedal-powered machine and then race for 24 hours.<\/p>\n

The Kilkivan students have been hitting the local roads twice a week on their bicycles as part of their training.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As part of a Road Safety Week initiative, Acting Sgt O\u2019Brien and members of the Kilkivan HPV Team made a pledge relating to road safety.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese young people are training hard riding their bikes to do their school proud in Maryborough next month,\u201d Acting Sgt O\u2019Brien said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve put many kilometres under them and I\u2019m happy to say that they are very aware of the road rules relating to bicycles.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt doesn\u2019t hurt to reinforce that message and that\u2019s why we\u2019re making these pledges today as part of Road Safety Week.\u201d<\/p>\n
