The treatment of greyhounds and the exposed problems of the dogs\u2019 short-life expectancy problem has crystallised a looming challenge for the thoroughbred sector.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sooner or later the magnifying glass will turn to the life stories of bloodstock.<\/p>\n

The warmth of the torch has already been felt via the imposition of the contemporary whip rules.<\/p>\n

At present, country racing serves as a mechanism that extends the active life of racehorses.<\/p>\n

There are countless cases of “tried” horses getting another chance to exist at a much lower class level.<\/p>\n

Many thrive, often because of the rural environs.<\/p>\n

And for some, it is an extra roll of the dice.<\/p>\n

An example of the efforts to spread a positive message to the public comes in the shape of the Triequithon display booked in for Caulfield on 29 August.<\/p>\n

As part of Racing Victoria\u2019s “Off The Track” project, retired racehorses that have moved on to dressage, country and show jumping events will have their new skills showcased between races on Memsie Stakes Day.<\/p>\n

The drum beat is about demonstrating how four-legged retirees are cared for after their spin on the turf.<\/p>\n

Racing NSW and Corrective Services NSW have a joint venture entitled Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Program that focusses on the retirement and retraining of racehorses.<\/p>\n

It seems a safe bet that pressure will eventually build on Racing Queensland to have some formal process to cover this topic of concern.<\/p>\n

This Weekend’s Activity<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Hannah English\u2019s win on the Raymond Frazer prepared Fastpitch at Cunnmulla last Saturday means she has climbed a rung on the ladder. <\/strong><\/p>\n

The fifth career victory sees her allowance drop from four to three kilograms.<\/p>\n

The Lee Park apprentice has four bookings at this weekend\u2019s Talwood fixture.<\/p>\n

The Nolan family, Gympie\u2019s wonderful long term sponsor, has been rewarded with a highly competitive line up in Saturday\u2019s $22,000 Nolan Meats Muster Cup.<\/p>\n

Although the open sprint was scrapped, the club has a very pleasing roll-up in a period that can be light on numbers.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, money must be really tight as Sunday\u2019s 1200 metre Maiden at the Sunshine Coast was not divided.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, there are no Burnett-based gallopers engaged at Kilcoy\u2019s Sky 2 TAB program that has a side serving of three harness races.<\/p>\n

The Top Tier Starts Turning Out<\/strong><\/h2>\n

This Saturday\u2019s $250,000 Warwick Stakes (1400m, Group 2) at Randwick is the first key all-age event of the new season.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The imported Pornichet, winner of this year\u2019s Toowoomba and Doomben Cups, puts Queensland winter form on the line while the reputations of Kermadec, First Seal, Complacent, Gust of Wind and Royal Descent will also be up for assessment.<\/p>\n

Great names such as Kingston Town, Super Impose, Filante, Sunline and Lohnro are on this race\u2019s honour board.<\/p>\n

Alas, this stellar group puts the race\u2019s recent victors in the shade.<\/p>\n

On Saturday week, the $400,000 Memsie Stakes (1400m,Group1) will be Melbourne\u2019s curtain-raiser to the spring.<\/p>\n

Australian racing would really benefit by the emergence of some long-term stars.<\/p>\n

There have been enough little skyrockets that light up the arenas for a season or so.<\/p>\n

Longevity that builds a fan base would be stimulating, because the “wow factor” is missing at the moment.<\/p>\n

Although it is too much to expect Black Caviar II or a Makybe Diva II to pop up soon, the country would welcome another Takeover Target, Northerly, Might and Power or Octagonal!<\/p>\n

The jury\u2019s verdict on Vancouver is out until he has another run over a longer trip.<\/p>\n

Some witnesses are naturally concerned that he struggled to be just two lengths clear of a $151 chance at the end of last weekend\u2019s San Domenico Stakes.<\/p>\n
