Goomeri resident Andrew Holden has conquered the 200+ km “Rio Tinto Ride to Conquer Cancer”, not a bad effort for a man who admitted earlier this year that he hadn’t been on a pushbike for 20 years.<\/p>\n

Andrew and 700 fellow riders left the Queensland University campus at St Lucia in Brisbane in chilly conditions on Saturday morning, heading south to Canungra.<\/p>\n

“After completing 106km it was time for a well-earned rest,” he said.<\/p>\n

But the torture wasn’t over yet. On Sunday morning – with muscles aching – Andrew headed back from Canungra to St Lucia.<\/p>\n

“Another 106km, this time in the rain,” he said.<\/p>\n

“Whilst I was in some pain, quitting was never an option.”<\/p>\n

Andrew,\u00a0 who is store manager at BGA AgriServices in Goomeri, raised $6000 for the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute in Brisbane, one of Australia\u2019s leading cancer research centres.<\/p>\n

He said he would like to thank his wife, Dianne, “for being on hand at each pit stop to help me off the bike and fill me with food drink and encouragement”.<\/p>\n

“The Goomeri community has been fantastic with my fund raising as has BGA AgriServices, Ruralco, CROW-FM and southburnett.com.au, I would like to thank them all,” he said.<\/p>\n
