Member for Flynn Ken O’Dowd has come out swinging to defend Queensland’s coal industry.<\/p>\n

He said the industry needed to be “protected” from “anti-coal activists who have little regard for the economy”.<\/p>\n

Mr O\u2019Dowd said people should consider the income coal was generating before criticising the resources sector.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople keep bashing the coal industry, but I\u2019m standing up for it,\u201d Mr O\u2019Dowd said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese attacks by anti-coal activists are unfounded and unnecessary.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mr O’Dowd said coal was the most cost-effective energy source available in Australia, and that people shouldn\u2019t let “activists distract them from the contribution the resources sector has made to his community”.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to protect jobs in this region and create economic growth, and we would be severely affected if we let some of these anti-coal groups get on top of us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cCoal creates jobs in a wide number of fields, including mines, the rail network, and the port.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr O\u2019Dowd also criticised wind power, stating it was an impractical approach to generating power.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is completely impractical to rely on windmills because they can just stop, so if there\u2019s no wind, you\u2019ve got no power, and you can\u2019t base a country\u2019s energy on that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
