Check the security features carefully before assuming a note is counterfeit<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Police are keen to quash rumours – circulating via social media – about “counterfeit” $50 notes in Queensland.<\/p>\n

A Queensland Police spokesman said today a number of people had reported to police that they suspected their banknotes were fake when in fact they were genuine.<\/p>\n

Police have released a list of some “common myths”:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Myth<\/strong> \u2013 Banknotes without the printed name below the portrait are counterfeit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
      \n
    • Fact<\/strong> \u2013 Printed names were only added to Australian banknotes from 2002. This was to help the public identify the people featured on our banknotes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
        \n
      • Myth<\/strong> \u2013 The Governor\u2019s signature is always above the Secretary to the Treasury\u2019s.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
          \n
        • Fact<\/strong> \u2013 The order of the signatures also changed in 2002 so that the Governor\u2019s signature was printed above that of the Secretary to the Treasury.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Police said the security features to check on banknotes were:<\/p>\n

            \n
          • Is it plastic?<\/li>\n
          • Look for the coat of arms<\/li>\n
          • Look for the star<\/li>\n
          • Check the clear window<\/li>\n
          • Feel the dark printing<\/li>\n
          • Check the print quality<\/li>\n
          • Look for the micro printing<\/li>\n
