Work on the first stage of the Kingaroy-Kilkivan Rail Trail is expected to start within two weeks.<\/p>\n

South Burnett Mayor Wayne Kratzmann made the announcement on Saturday morning at the unveiling of the Charlotte The Emu memorial statue in Wondai’s Coronation Park.<\/p>\n

The new Rail Trail will be built in sections, the Mayor said, and the first section would run between Wondai and Wooroolin.<\/p>\n

Work should begin within a fortnight, weather permitting.<\/p>\n

The Mayor said the Rail Trail would complement work already undertaken on Wondai’s Village Green, which was upgraded with lighting and power outlets earlier this week.<\/p>\n

Later the Mayor told southburnett.com.au<\/strong> the Wondai-Wooroolin section had been chosen to kick off the project for three reasons:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. it was relatively easy to upgrade to a Rail Trail<\/li>\n
  2. it would provide benefits to Wooroolin, Tingoora and Wondai, which were all natural places for users to get on or off the Trail<\/li>\n
  3. it had high visibility from the Bunya Highway, which would help advertise the Trail’s existence to passing motorists<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    However – because the section lies close to the Tick Line – animals would not be permitted on it.<\/p>\n

    This restriction is not expected to apply to the future Kingaroy-Wooroolin or Murgon-Kilkivan sections, which are entirely within Ticky or Tick-Free areas.<\/p>\n

    The project would include upgrading Tingoora’s historic railway bridge to accomodate pedestrians.<\/p>\n

    The Mayor said he hopes the section will be open to the public before the end of this year.<\/p>\n
