{"id":114263,"date":"2015-07-15T22:46:02","date_gmt":"2015-07-15T12:46:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=114263"},"modified":"2020-11-20T14:43:43","modified_gmt":"2020-11-20T04:43:43","slug":"mps-defend-china-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2015\/07\/15\/mps-defend-china-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"MPs Defend China Deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure id=\"attachment_41380\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41380\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/ken-odowd-200.jpg\" alt=\"Ken O&#039;Dowd\" width=\"200\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-41380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/ken-odowd-200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/ken-odowd-200-171x300.jpg 171w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-41380\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Member for Flynn Ken O&#8217;Dowd<\/figcaption><\/figure> <strong>July 15, 2015<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Member for Flynn Ken O&#8217;Dowd has emphasised the Free Trade Agreement with China will not hurt local jobs.<\/p>\n<p>He described claims to the contrary as \u201cutterly false \u2026 union propaganda\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, Mr O&#8217;Dowd has described union criticism of the FTA as &#8220;xenophobic&#8221;, a description echoed by Trade Minister Andrew Robb (see below).<\/p>\n<p>The CFMEU has claimed that the FTA will allow Chinese companies to circumvent current regulations by employing their own workers on Australia-based projects at a reduced pay rate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese allegations are utterly false and nothing more than union propaganda, with the only purpose being to create paranoia amongst decent, hardworking people who have no need to be worried,\u201d Mr O\u2019Dowd said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cOur government has implemented a program separate to the FTA that will give up to 5000 young Chinese people with tertiary education the opportunity to experience a working holiday in our country.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mr O&#8217;Dowd said the Work and Holiday Arrangement program was intended to build closer cultural ties between Australia and China.<\/p>\n<p>He said visa holders were not sponsored by any employer and could work wherever they chose during their year-long stay so long as they don\u2019t work for more than six months with any one employer.<\/p>\n<p>When working, all visa holders must be engaged in accordance with Australian workplace law, including awards and workplace health and safety, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr O\u2019Dowd said the program would benefit rural areas by supporting the development of tourism services.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>* * *<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_104675\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-104675\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/allenhicks1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-104675\" title=\"Allen Hicks \" src=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/allenhicks1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/allenhicks1.jpg 200w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/allenhicks1-182x300.jpg 182w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-104675\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ETU national secretary Allen Hicks (Photo: ETU)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Trade Minister Andrew Robb has accused another union, the ETU, of mounting a &#8220;xenophobic scare campaign&#8221; against the China FTA.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The ETU has been circulating copies of a letter from Mr Robb to Chinese Commerce Minister Gao Hucheng which says the mandatory skills assessment for 10 occupations would be removed: Automotive Electrician, Cabinetmaker, Carpenter, Carpenter and Joiner, Diesel Motor Mechanic, Electrician (General), Electrician (Special Class), Joiner, Motor Mechanic (General) and Motorcycle Mechanic.<\/p>\n<p>ETU National Secretary Allen Hicks told the ABC the Federal Government&#8217;s decision to remove the mandatory skills assessment requirement for Chinese workers in these 10 occupations was an &#8220;absolute disgrace&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s going to create significant workplace dangers, not only just for electricians, but all those people who use electricity,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;China has a woeful workplace health and safety record.
