Wondai demonstrated again why they’re at the top of the South Burnett rugby league premiership table when they notched up their eighth straight victory on Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n

The Wolves mauled the Monto Roos, who were coming off a 34-26 win over Murgon. Wondai put on a fierce defensive display at home that limited the visitors to just two tries.<\/p>\n

The afternoon opened with a moving #TakeAKneeForAckers tribute to Sunshine Coast Falcons player James Ackerman who suffered fatal head injuries in a Queensland Cup game last weekend.<\/p>\n

The minute’s silence on bended knee by both teams was followed by another minute’s silence for local league family matriarch Sylvia Alberts (nee Chambers) who also died recently.<\/p>\n

When the action got underway, the Wondai and Monto teams tested each other out for the first 10 minutes before the Wolves took off – scoring five tries in just 15 minutes, including back-to-back tries by Luke Hedges and Ryan Stower.<\/p>\n

Hedges’ first try was a good demonstration of how the Wolves were slicing through the Roos’ defence. Luke threw a massive dummy that suckered in the opposition, leaving the tryline wide open.<\/p>\n

Monto’s first points came with 10 minutes to go in the half, via fullback Jarrod Dahtler. The conversion attempt hit the posts and was waved away.<\/p>\n

At half time, Wondai led 34-4.<\/p>\n

The second half started in a similar manner with Wondai charging the Monto line.<\/p>\n

The torrent began to show on the Roos with tiredness and injuries starting to take a toll. One player was taken to hospital with suspected broken ribs.<\/p>\n

Wondai continued on their winning way, scoring six more tries before the full-time siren.<\/p>\n

The Roos kept trying, with captain Shane Carter converting his own try with 28 minutes left in the game. Then with eight minutes left, the Roos crossed again, but it was ruled no try. Wondai then suffered the same fate with just a few minutes to go.<\/p>\n

The full-time score was Wondai 68, Monto 10.<\/p>\n

Try scorers for Wondai were Ryan Stower (4), Luke Hedges (3), Jared Porter, Thomas McDowall, Tyrone Murray, Shane Borninkhof and Troy Kerkow. Danny Alberts kicked 10 from 12 conversions.<\/p>\n

Tries for Monto came from Jarrod Dahtler and Shane Carter; Carter kicked one goal.<\/p>\n

Next weekend (July 4) will be the last round of fixtures matches in the Burnett Championship: <\/strong><\/p>\n

    • Kingaroy v Cherbourg (at Kingaroy)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      UPDATE: Both these matches will now be played at Kingaroy.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

      On July 11, the Burnett Championship will be decided with Finals to be played at Murgon (South Burnett 1 v North Burnett 1, South Burnett 2 v North Burnett 2).<\/p>\n

      On July 18, Wondai will host its annual Mini-Mod carnival, followed by the President’s Cup decider between Wondai and Cherbourg.<\/p>\n

                Also at the weekend, South Burnett Eagles’ U13s, U14s and U16s played in Charleville as part of a “Cultural Exchange”.<\/strong><\/p>\n

                The players left the South Burnett by bus on Friday and returned on Sunday night after a big weekend of representative football.<\/p>\n
