{"id":111476,"date":"2015-06-22T10:30:32","date_gmt":"2015-06-22T00:30:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=111476"},"modified":"2015-06-26T17:22:17","modified_gmt":"2015-06-26T07:22:17","slug":"the-king-of-peasants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2015\/06\/22\/the-king-of-peasants\/","title":{"rendered":"The King Of Peasants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/ford-on-food-d.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/ford-on-food-d.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Ford On Food\" width=\"210\" height=\"350\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-77803\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/ford-on-food-d.jpg 210w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/ford-on-food-d-180x300.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><\/a><strong>June 22, 2015<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>by Jason Ford<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/fordonfood.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ford on Food<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In my humble opinion, turnips are one of those good-old-fashion peasant vegetables &#8230; and I love them!<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;re hearty, healthy, earthy, rustic, versatile and affordable.<\/p>\n<p>Turnips are a root vegetable and are a relative of cabbage.<\/p>\n<p>The root section of the plant swells into a bulbous shape, and the top of the bulb that is slightly exposed to sunlight often develops an attractive, purplish suntan, while the unexposed base remains white.<\/p>\n<p>The immature stems and leaves of the plant can be used as a cooked leafy vegetable, or used fresh in salads.<\/p>\n<p>Cultivated in Europe for millennia, turnips are now grown all over the globe and have found their way into the cuisines of almost all cultures.<\/p>\n<p>They come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours. <\/p>\n<p>Turnips can be purchased in a long root shaped, small baby size or large mature bulb shaped. <\/p>\n<p>I have seen deep red, purple, green and pure white skinned varieties &#8211; but virtually all have white flesh.<\/p>\n<p>The smaller immature turnips can be eaten raw or finely grated into salads as they are tender, juicy and spicy.<\/p>\n<p>More mature turnips contain less water, are more fibrous and develop a sweeter flavour profile.<\/p>\n<p>For this reason, the larger variety is usually cooked into a dish with other ingredients.<\/p>\n<p>They can be roasted, braised, boiled, mashed, steamed and saut\u00e9ed.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>* * *<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>Sesame Roasted Vegetables<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/turnips2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/turnips2.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"turnips2\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-111477\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/turnips2.png 300w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/turnips2-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/turnips2-50x50.png 50w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><strong>Ingredients:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>500g turnip, cut into wedges\n<li>500g pontiac potato, quartered\n<li>500g jap pumpkin, cut into wedges\n<li>500g red onion, wedges\n<li>500g carrot, quartered lengthwise\n<li>2 tbsp sesame oil\n<li>1\/2 cup olive oil\n<li>2 tbsp sesame seeds\n<li>1\/4 cup brown sugar\n<li>salt and pepper\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Method:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Pre-heat oven to 200<sup>o<\/sup>C\n<li>Toss all ingredients together in a bowl until well coated.\n<li>Arrange vegetables on a greased roasting tray.\n<li>Bake for approximately 40 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through.\n<li>Serve with your favourite roast meats\n<\/ol>\n<p>Serves 8<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/ford-on-food\/\">Read more Ford On Food columns<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In my humble opinion, turnips are one of those good-old-fashion peasant vegetables &#8230; and I love them!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":9,"featured_media":111477,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[595],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
