Students relax when a mentor sits down beside them at Murgon State School.<\/p>\n

The children know they\u2019ll get the help they need to keep up with their mates.<\/p>\n

In turn, they behave better and learn more.<\/p>\n

And the mentors love what they do.<\/p>\n

They get a buzz from the smile they put on the children\u2019s faces.<\/p>\n

“They missed me,” Aggie Dynevor said.<\/p>\n

Aggie returned to the role about a month ago.<\/p>\n

“They come up to me and say \u2018it\u2019s great to have you back\u2019”.<\/p>\n

Her fellow mentors have a similar connection to the children.<\/p>\n

“A boy came and said \u2018thanks for coming to teach us\u2019,” Tarryn Hopkins said.<\/p>\n

“It made me smile. We don\u2019t do much. I just sat there and helped him.”<\/p>\n

But Tarryn said the boy had been struggling and she loved the fact she made a difference to his day.<\/p>\n

Stacy Collard is part of the team and said all the mentors had similar stories.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“It\u2019s encouraging because normally the children wouldn\u2019t get their work done without our helping them,” she said, before adding she had increased respect for teachers.<\/p>\n

“I always knew they worked hard but this has given me a new appreciation,” Stacy said.<\/p>\n

Making up the band of four on the day PaCE Matters spoke to the mentoring team was Sharon Shepherd.<\/p>\n

Sharon said all the children were excellent and made her feel good.<\/p>\n

As a single mother of five she thought mentoring could possibly add to her life stress.<\/p>\n

“But I was wrong,” Sharon said.<\/p>\n

“Now I think \u2018why didn\u2019t I do it earlier?\u2019”<\/p>\n

The other mentors agreed and are now thinking of possibly doing TAFE study to increase their skills and even possibly becoming qualified teacher aides.<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s great that we can help children who may not be getting the support they need at home,” Stacy said.<\/p>\n

“We help any child that needs it.”<\/p>\n

Sharon adds: “It makes me complete. I was just at home feeling sorry for myself and now I feel great!”<\/p>\n

Tarryn said: “It would be great if more parents came and did this.”<\/p>\n

Aggie finished with: “It\u2019s great to be back.”<\/p>\n
