{"id":108918,"date":"2015-05-28T14:18:28","date_gmt":"2015-05-28T04:18:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=108918"},"modified":"2020-11-12T15:44:34","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T05:44:34","slug":"kids-walk-to-stamp-out-violence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2015\/05\/28\/kids-walk-to-stamp-out-violence\/","title":{"rendered":"Kids Walk To Stamp Out Violence"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_108919\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-108919\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/20150512dv.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-108919\" title=\"20150512 Domestic Violence\" src=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/20150512dv.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/20150512dv.jpg 620w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/20150512dv-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-108919\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;It\u2019s time every adult behaved like somebody children should look up to&#8221; &#8230; that was the message Cherbourg police constable Amy Dalton and police liaison officer Leah Hunter gave at the Cherbourg State School\u2019s march against domestic violence (Photo: Marcus Priaulx)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>by Marcus Priaulx<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cherbourg.qld.gov.au\/PACE\/PaCE_home.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Barambah PaCE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cherbourg State School children have done their bit to help stamp domestic violence out by marching around the town to spread the message that domestic violence isn&#8217;t ok &#8230; &#8220;Not Now, Not Ever&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Police and domestic violence survivors came to the school to talk to the children earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>They learned it was okay to talk to police or other adults if they saw people hurting each other because domestic violence is a bad, sad, horrible thing that makes children feel scared and unsafe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re saying &#8216;no more violence&#8217; because we want a happy community, happy people, happy children and lots of smiles,\u201d domestic violence survivor Toni Jeavons said.<\/p>\n<p>She suffered at the hands of a stepfather and then a husband before she walked out: \u201cI was a brave, smart, beautiful woman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Toni then joined the Queensland Police Service, counselled domestic violence victims and is the author of a book called, \u201cWise Grasshopper\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Cherbourg police constable Amy Dalton said 34 people had been killed by their partners in Australia so far this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur hands were given to us not to assault a loved one but to protect them, to love them and to care for them,\u201d Amy said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a sign of weakness when you commit an act of domestic violence.\u00a0 It\u2019s a sign of strength, of power, when you walk away, when you say \u2018no\u2019 to domestic violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The children, teachers, Cherbourg and South Burnett community members then walked around the town, led by teacher Frank Malone who beat a drum to get people\u2019s attention.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cherbourg State School children have done their bit to help stamp domestic violence out by marching around the town to spread the message that domestic violence isn&#8217;t ok &#8230; &#8220;Not Now, Not Ever&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":108919,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[3,24],"tags":[1135,1132,35],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
