I\u2019ll lend hand … Shantelle Georgetown helps Rondine Speedy with her work at Cherbourg State School<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Classroom mentors Shantelle Georgetown and Alex Speedy have amazed teachers with their ability to help children learn at Cherbourg State School.<\/p>\n

The young couple has two children aged two and four but still manage to help in the classrooms almost every day.<\/p>\n

They cut an impressive duo with their polished presentation and graceful manner, and they love what they do.<\/p>\n

Alex admits there are days he finds trying but he buckles up and rises to the occasion.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are times when the children just want to see me as a joker they see on the street, but in the classroom I have to stay professional,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m close to some of their parents but here I have to be in charge.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter they\u2019ve finished their work the children\u2019s faces light up with a smile if they show Miss Judy what they\u2019ve done and she likes it.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt makes my day.\u00a0I go home even happier.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shantelle loves every day.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I hear the kids say \u2018it\u2019s easy\u2019 and knowing that I taught them something today makes me feel overwhelmed,\u201d she said.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The pair are determined to instil the love of learning within their own children.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want them to get up wanting to go to school without us having to force them,\u201d Alex said.<\/p>\n

He and Shantelle also have a new appreciation for teachers as they believed their job would be easy.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom being young to now, is an eye opener,\u201d Shantelle said.\u00a0\u201cI never saw it from a teacher\u2019s point of view when I was at school.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alex agrees.\u00a0He admits he didn\u2019t pay much attention in class and was friends with a rowdy crew.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday I see the teachers and feel a bit bad about how I was as a kid,\u201d Alex said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need our children to appreciate what they do.\u00a0I think parents need to get more involved with the teachers and communicate better with them too.\u00a0The teachers are here to teach and the kids to learn.<\/p>\n

\u201cParents need to listen to the teachers and get their feedback, not just take their children\u2019s word about what goes on.<\/p>\n

“The teachers want the children to do well and more people should appreciate that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Principal Peter Sansby said Shantelle and Alex were a massive asset to the school.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAll staff believe they do an amazing job,\u201d Mr Sansby said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI – \u00a0and others – \u00a0think they should think about a career in education.\u201d<\/p>\n
