Today’s State Budget has confirmed that Kingaroy’s new multi-million dollar ambulance station will go ahead despite the State Government’s tight strings on the money purse.<\/p>\n

$1.5 million towards the project was announced in today’s State Budget.<\/p>\n

A new ambulance station has been mooted for some time and Local Ambulance Committee delegates inspected plans during an area meeting held in Kingaroy in February (SBBiz, February 16, 2012)<\/strong>, but this is the first time Budget funds have been allocated to the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Work To Begin Within Months<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Construction of a multi-million dollar replacement ambulance station in Kingaroy is only months away.<\/p>\n

Community Safety Minister Jack Dempsey said $1.5 million would be spent building the replacement Kingaroy Ambulance Station this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Newman Government is working to ensure frontline staff are not saddled with out-of-date facilities and have what they need,” he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe works in Kingaroy are just a fraction of the $51.4 million the Newman Government plans to spend on ambulance stations and vehicles over the 2012-13 financial year.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe State Government will spend a total of $3.6 million to complete the ambulance station by December 2013.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cQueenslanders deserve to have the best emergency services available and these upgrades will help ensure frontline staff have the support they need to continue providing outstanding services to the community.\u201d<\/p>\n

Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington welcomed the investment in the region.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese new facilities will ensure Kingaroy is not left behind when it comes to emergency services,\u201d Mrs Frecklington said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmbulance officers in our region do a fantastic job in often challenging situations and I support the Newman Government\u2019s commitment to supporting frontline emergency services officers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe State Government has recognised that Kingaroy is a growing area and is already preparing for the future needs of the region.\u201d<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington told southburnett.com.au<\/strong>\u00a0the government had agreed to build the facility this financial year.<\/p>\n

More good news for the South Burnett was the allocation of $1 million towards a Safe Haven facility at Cherbourg for children, young people and their families experiencing domestic violence.<\/p>\n

The government also approved $11 million funding for Queensland\u2019s 14 regional natural resource management bodies, including \u00a0$750,000 for the\u00a0Burnett Mary Regional Group.<\/p>\n

Of interest to South Burnett farmers would be the allocation of $4.8 million into research into pulses and grains. \u00a0Mrs Frecklington said this\u00a0was part of the government’s plan to make Queensland \u00a0“the food bowl of Asia”.<\/p>\n

The Budget also contains a boost for State Schools … P&Cs will be able to apply for up to $160,000 per school to fix existing priority maintenance issues under a two-year “Advancing Our Schools Maintenance Fund”.<\/p>\n

In 2012-13, $100 million would be made available, with a further $100 million in 2013-14.<\/p>\n

P&Cs would be asked to obtain three quotes to submit with their application and would also be asked to contribute to the maintenance task if they have funds to do so.<\/p>\n

Funding of $4.9 million has also been set aside to provide full-time teacher aides in 150 Prep classes each year in “areas of greatest need”.<\/p>\n

Deputy Premier and Member for Callide Jeff Seeney said regional Queensland would be a major beneficiary of the Budget.<\/p>\n

He said the Budget also included:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  • $60 million this year for the Royalties for the Regions Program<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
      \n
    • $25 million for the Land Supply, Economic and Regional Development Initiative, and<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
        \n
      • $2.5 million for the GasFields Commission<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        AgForce vice-president Ian Burnett told the ABC this evening that there were “no real surprises” for the agriculture sector however he was supportive of the funding for R&D in the grains and pulse industry.<\/p>\n

        Australian Medical Association Queensland president Dr Alex Markwell and the Rural Doctors Association of Queensland were less supportive, fearing\u00a0regional Queensland would suffer from job losses in the health sector.<\/p>\n

        Almost one-third of the 14,000 job losses come from the Health Department. Budget documents detail job cuts department by department, including:<\/strong><\/p>\n

          \n
        • Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestries – 450<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
            \n
          • Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services – 385<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
              \n
            • Health – 4140<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
                \n
              • Natural Resources and Mines – 360<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                A rise in mining royalties from 10 per cent to 12.5 per cent for coal valued at more than $100 per tonne has been described as a “recipe for disaster” by mining magnate Clive Palmer. The rise will be locked in for 10 years to give the industry certainty.<\/p>\n

                Mr Palmer told the ABC the rise would “kill the State’s economy” and put thousands of Queenslanders out of a job.<\/p>\n

                Treasurer Tim Nicholls described the Budget as “the most important Budget in a generation” and made no apologies for having to make tough decisions.<\/p>\n

                “Without corrective action, gross debt is expected to be $92 billion in 2015-16 and $100 billion by 2018-19,” he said.<\/p>\n

                Mr Nicholls said interest has been the fastest growing expense of the Queensland Government over the past decade and the State had been “living beyond its means” since 2005-06.<\/p>\n

                “Expenses grew at an average of 10.5 per cent while revenue grew at an average rate of 6.9 per cent,” he said.<\/p>\n

                “And from 2005-06 to 2007-08 alone employee expenses jumped 40 per cent and over the last decade the average increase in employee expenses was 8.7 per cent.<\/p>\n

                “Public service numbers increased on an FTE (full-time equivalent) basis by 40 per cent from 146,323 in June 2000 to 206,802 in June 2011.<\/p>\n

                “In 2005-06 just 34 per cent of capital expenditure was funded through borrowing, and by 2010-11 96 per cent of all capital investment was funded from borrowings.”<\/p>\n
