{"id":106644,"date":"2015-05-13T00:10:35","date_gmt":"2015-05-12T14:10:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=106644"},"modified":"2020-12-15T13:30:36","modified_gmt":"2020-12-15T03:30:36","slug":"some-good-news-for-ration-shed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2015\/05\/13\/some-good-news-for-ration-shed\/","title":{"rendered":"Some Good News For Ration Shed"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_106645\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-106645\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/20150512rationshed.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-106645\" title=\"20150512 Ration Shed Management Committee\" src=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/20150512rationshed.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/20150512rationshed.jpg 620w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/20150512rationshed-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-106645\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Ration Shed Museum management committee members, back row, from left, Vincent Conlon, Jeanette Brown, Bevan Costello and Robyn Hofmeyr with administration officer Bradley Bennett; front row, management committee members Ada Simpson, Grace Stanley and Sandra Morgan with the Certificate marking their latest award win<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>May 13, 2015<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After months of worrying about their future, the management committee of Cherbourg&#8217;s Ration Shed Museum have received some unexpected good news &#8230; they&#8217;ve won another important award recognising their work.<\/p>\n<p>And more importantly, the award &#8211; the John Oxley Library Community History Award &#8211; brings with it prize money of $5000.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s nowhere near the amount the group needs to keep its four staff employed after June, but it&#8217;s a start &#8230; and the committee also has high hopes there may be more good news in the wind.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Cherbourg community leaders and residents sent an open letter to Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Deputy PM Warren Truss calling for more support for The Ration Shed following its failure to secure necessary assistance from the Federal Government\u2019s new \u201cIndigenous Advancement Strategy\u201d funding system.<\/p>\n<p>The Open Letter was accompanied by a petition containing more than 250 signatures from Cherbourg residents.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We could have got more but we had a deadline,&#8221; management committee spokesman Bevan Costello said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>However, he said the committee had been overwhelmed with the support it had received from the South Burnett community and schools since the bad news about the funding situation had been publicised: &#8220;People have been coming up and asking how they can support us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The committee has now received a letter in reply from Mr Truss which has given them a glimmer of hope.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Deputy PM notes in his letter that the Department of Indigenous Affairs has &#8220;offered to work with The Ration Shed on its proposal to become self-sustaining&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;I have also written to the Minister For Indigenous Affairs, Senator Nigel Scullion and asked him if it is possible to review your application so that The Ration Shed and its associated infrastructure can be upgraded.
