{"id":105584,"date":"2015-05-04T21:48:28","date_gmt":"2015-05-04T11:48:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=105584"},"modified":"2020-12-21T12:05:32","modified_gmt":"2020-12-21T02:05:32","slug":"alert-on-dangerous-electrical-cables","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2015\/05\/04\/alert-on-dangerous-electrical-cables\/","title":{"rendered":"Alert On Dangerous<BR> Electrical Cables"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_105590\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-105590\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/20150504cable.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-105590\" title=\"20150504 Infinity cables\" src=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/20150504cable.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"143\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-105590\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Examples of the types of cable that are subject to the recall (Photo: ACCC)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>May 4, 2015<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is concerned there are many unsuspecting home and business owners who have dangerous electrical cables installed despite a nationwide recall last year.<\/p>\n<p>Of an estimated 4000km of faulty cable supplied by Infinity Cable Co, only 15 per cent has been fixed under the recall.<\/p>\n<p>The ACCC said the cables fail to meet safety standards due to poor quality plastic insulation coating.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tests have shown that the cable may become prematurely brittle which could cause fires or electric shock if they were disturbed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is estimated the cables will start becoming brittle in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnsafe Infinity cable is currently installed in thousands of households and businesses across Australia &#8211; it needs to be located and made safe before it poses a serious danger to the community from next year,\u201d ACCC Deputy Chair Delia Rickard said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsumers who purchased new properties, undertook renovations, had appliances installed or had electrical work carried out in the past few years should contact a licensed electrician for a safety inspection to determine if Infinity cables were installed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn electrician would typically be able to inspect a home for around $100, though costs will vary depending upon the size, location and design of the property. Such costs can be recovered from the supplier should affected cables be discovered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsumers should not attempt to inspect cables themselves.
