April 30, 2015<\/strong><\/p>\n

An above-normal crowd of about 400 turned out at the Nanango War Memorial on the corner of Drayton and Henry streets for this year’s Anzac Day Dawn Service.<\/p>\n

The service commenced at 5:25am when a catafalque party from Nanango’s 177 Australian Cadet Unit took up position.<\/p>\n

This was followed by an address from Nanango RSL’s president; prayers led by Rev Bill Hogan; and then the Dawn Service address, which was given by Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington.<\/p>\n

After this, officials and members of the public laid wreaths before the reading of the Ode, the playing of The Last Post, a traditional minute’s silence, then the playing of Reveille and a final benediction and blessing.<\/p>\n

At 7:30am, many townsfolk made a pilgrimage to the Nanango Cemetery where poppies were placed on war-related graves, which had been marked the day before with small Australian flags.<\/p>\n

Then at 10:00am, the town turned out in force once again for the Commemoration Service, which was preceded by a traditional parade down Drayton Street to the War Memorial.<\/p>\n

This year’s parade was overflown by a jet from Amberley’s Air Force base, and was marked by a special tribute to the many women who volunteered to serve as nurses to the troops in World War I.<\/p>\n

Peter Mangan gave the main address at this year’s Commemoration; Nanango High School’s captains read a poem; and students from St Mary’s Catholic College gave a reading before the Ode, the Last Post, the minute’s silence, “Rouse”, the national anthems and the benediction.<\/p>\n

After this, invited guests adjourned to Nanango RSL for lunch.<\/p>\n
