This year, the figure has risen to 1731.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, within the Cherbourg Aboriginal Council area, there were 91 residents registered in 2013 and 100 in 2015 &#8211; a 10 per cent rise.<\/p>\n<p>However, the percentage of total Cherbourg residents with diabetes would be much larger than the percentage of South Burnett residents because of the much smaller population base.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The diabetes increase also varies across the South Burnett&#8217;s adjoining shires.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Residents in the North Burnett Regional Council area area are faring much better, with only a 9 per cent increase, from 409 to 444.<\/p>\n<table width=\"240\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"3\" align=\"left\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<table class=\"box1\" width=\"220\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"10\" align=\"left\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong style=\"font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 26px;\">What Is<br \/>\nType 2<br \/>\nDiabetes?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Type 2 diabetes is a lifestyle condition where the body still produces some insulin but it may not be enough to keep blood glucose levels within a healthy range.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The risk for Type 2 diabetes is higher if you:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have a family history Type 2 diabetes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Developed diabetes during pregnancy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Are more than 40 years of age<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Don&#8217;t get enough exercise<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Have high blood pressure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Are overweight, measured as BMI &gt;25 (weight\/height\u00b2)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Have a waist measurement above 94cm for men or 80cm for women<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Have a poor diet containing too much fatty and sugary food<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>&#8211; Diabetes Queensland<\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Gympie council area has a 10 per cent rise (2500 to 2751) and Toowoomba a 12 per cent rise (6217 to 6944).<\/p>\n<p>Somerset is up 15 per cent, from 997 to 1142, and Western Downs is up 11 per cent from 1602 to 1783.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Diabetes Queensland CEO Michelle Trute said the latest figures showed there were now more than 186,000 Queenslanders living with Type 2 diabetes registered with the National Diabetes Services Scheme.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Diabetes Queensland is concerned there could be a further 515,000 Queenslanders living with Type 2 diabetes who are undiagnosed, have pre-diabetes or are at high risk of developing the condition,&#8221; Ms Trute said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Type 2 Diabetes is the single biggest challenge facing Queensland&#8217;s health system and the new figures show how rapidly the number of people diagnosed with the condition is increasing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Unless we act now Queensland could see diabetes-related health care spending increase by as much as 500 per cent over three decades to 2032.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ms Trute said the entire community had a role to play in tackling Queensland&#8217;s Type 2 diabetes epidemic.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;International studies have shown Type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed in 58 per cent of cases,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Type 2 diabetes is serious, it is for life and the consequences can include blindness, limb amputation, kidney failure and, ultimately, death.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><b>She encouraged any Queenslander concerned about the rising rates of Type 2 diabetes to have their say during the Federal Government&#8217;s National Diabetes Strategy consultation.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;During the last Federal election Diabetes Queensland lobbied all parties to adopt a National Diabetes Strategy and consultation for that strategy is now underway,&#8221; Ms Trute said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I would encourage all Queenslanders to have their say.&#8221;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Related article: <a href=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2012\/07\/1-in-10-locals-at-risk-of-diabetes\/\">1 in 10 Locals At Risk of Diabetes<\/b><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>External link: <a href=\"https:\/\/consultations.health.gov.au\/phd-social-policy\/nds\/consult_view\" target=\"_blank\">National Diabetes Strategy consultation<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Figures released this week by Diabetes Queensland show the number of South Burnett residents living with Type 2 diabetes has risen 13 per cent over the past two years, higher than the State average of 10 per cent.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":291649,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[172,3],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.11 -
