The Murgon War Memorial ... to undergo restoration<\/figcaption><\/figure>April 17, 2015<\/strong><\/p>\n

Murgon RSL Sub-Branch has been given a $3000 grant by the Federal Government to restore the Murgon War Memorial.<\/p>\n

Member for Wide Bay and Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss said today the grant would come from the government\u2019s “Saluting Their Service” commemorations program. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis work will help restore the appearance of the Murgon War Memorial, which is almost 90 years old,” Mr Truss said. <\/p>\n

“Like many memorials that were erected in small country towns after the First World War, the Murgon memorial has an important place in ensuring that the service and sacrifices of the first Anzacs are not forgotten.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Saluting Their Service program encourages community participation in commemorative activities which honour the service and sacrifice of those who have served Australia in wars, conflicts and peace operations.<\/p>\n

The Widgee Anzac Committee has received $1235 under the same program.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mr Truss said this grant would enable the planting of a ‘Lone Pine’ tree near the Widgee Memorial Hall and Cenotaph.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe tree is the symbol of the ferocious Lone Pine assault by Australian troops on Turkish forces at Gallipoli, which claimed the lives of 910 Australians between August 6-9, 1915.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
