{"id":101163,"date":"2015-03-27T14:39:39","date_gmt":"2015-03-27T04:39:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=101163"},"modified":"2020-11-16T11:27:49","modified_gmt":"2020-11-16T01:27:49","slug":"glyphophate-labelled-possibly-carcinogenic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2015\/03\/27\/glyphophate-labelled-possibly-carcinogenic\/","title":{"rendered":"Glyphosate Labelled &#8216;Probably Carcinogenic&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_101164\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-101164\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/glyphosate.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-101164\" title=\"Glyphosate\" src=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/glyphosate.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"382\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/glyphosate.jpg 620w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/glyphosate-300x155.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-101164\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The glyphosate molecule &#8230; Monsanto discovered its herbicide characteristics in the 1970s<br \/>(Photo: Wikipedia)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>March 27, 2015<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The world&#8217;s most popular herbicide, glyphosate, has been labelled as &#8220;probably carcinogenic to humans&#8221; by international researchers after a review of existing studies.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, 17 experts from 11 countries met at the World Health Organisation&#8217;s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in France to assess the carcinogenicity of different organophosphate chemicals used as pesticides or herbicides.<\/p>\n<p>Their findings are summarised in <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanonc\/article\/PIIS1470-2045%2815%2970134-8\/abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Lancet<\/a><\/strong> medical journal (free text available after registering with website).<\/p>\n<p>The classification that has attracted the most attention is their report on glyphosate, a herbicide discovered by Monsanto which is now used in more than 750 products, both on farms and in home gardens.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers said there was &#8220;limited evidence in humans for carcinogenicity&#8221; but after examining epidemiological studies, animal studies, and in vitro studies, classified the herbicide as \u201cprobably carcinogenic to humans\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The IARC team reported:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The use of glyphosate has risen in agriculture in recent years due to the development of glyphosate-resistant crops<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Case-control studies of occupational exposure in the USA, Canada and Sweden have reported increased risks for non-Hodgkin lymphoma. However,\u00a0 a large cohort study of agricultural workers did not show any significantly increased risk<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Glyphosate has been detected in the blood and urine of agricultural workers, indicating absorption<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Microbes in the human gut may be able to metabolise glyphosate.
