{"id":101042,"date":"2015-03-26T15:13:23","date_gmt":"2015-03-26T05:13:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/?p=101042"},"modified":"2020-08-17T16:21:50","modified_gmt":"2020-08-17T06:21:50","slug":"big-rise-in-ross-river-fever-cases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/2015\/03\/26\/big-rise-in-ross-river-fever-cases\/","title":{"rendered":"Big Rise in Ross River Fever Cases"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_22782\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22782\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/mosquito-620.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-22782\" title=\"Mosquito\" src=\"http:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/mosquito-620-300x186.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/mosquito-620-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/mosquito-620-285x177.jpg 285w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/mosquito-620-269x167.jpg 269w, https:\/\/southburnett.com.au\/news2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/mosquito-620.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22782\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mosquitos in the South Burnett can transmit Ross River fever and Barmah Forest Virus<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>March 26, 2015<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>South Burnett residents are being urged to protect themselves from mosquito bites to help stem a dramatic increase in Ross River Virus cases.<\/p>\n<p>Darling Downs Public Health Unit Director Dr Penny Hutchinson said that so far during March 2015 there had been 75 cases notified in the Darling Downs region, a significant increase on the previous five years for the same period.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe latest figures up to the second week of March show there have been 3292 notifications of Ross River Virus across Queensland which is 8.1 times the five-year average,\u201d Dr Hutchinson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeriodic peaks are seen in Queensland with the current peak being the second highest in the past 25 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said trends in age group and sex distribution of notifications in 2015 were consistent with those over the previous five years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe disease occurs most often in young adults 25-40 years of age and children are more likely to show no symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRoss River Virus is spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes and causes fatigue, fever, skin rash and joint pain which can be very debilitating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Across the State, mosquito activity is likely to continue over the coming weeks due to recent and ongoing weather conditions including rainfall, tidal patterns, temperature and humidity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr Hutchinson said the best Ross River Fever prevention was to take precautions against being bitten by mosquitoes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Avoid being outside during times of heavy infestation of mosquitoes eg. early evenings in the warmer months<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Use insect repellents and wear protective, light-coloured clothing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Screen living and sleeping areas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Check your home regularly for potential mosquito breeding areas eg. any uncovered water containers should be emptied regularly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re showing any symptoms of Ross River Virus, always visit your GP,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf your GP confirms the diagnosis, there\u2019s no specific medical treatment for Ross River Virus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, your GP will be able to provide advice on how to manage the symptoms that develop.
