South Burnett residents who thought it was chillier than usual on Saturday morning weren’t imagining it.
According to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), Kingaroy Airport’s weather station recorded an overnight low of minus 0.1 degrees.
This was almost 13 degrees lower than the same day last year, and 7.5 degrees lower than the long-term average minimum temperature for May (7.4 degrees).
It was also the coldest morning minimum recorded at the airport so far this year.
A BOM spokesperson said early risers who stepped outside may have felt it was even a few degrees colder because of the windchill factor.
The reason for the cold weather is a large high drifting slowly eastwards across southern Australia which is maintaining a ridge over central and southern Queensland.
This is producing a cool, dry air mass across the majority of the state.
BOM forecasts that 15 to 25 km/h winds will persist during Saturday, Sunday and Monday, strengthening briefly for a few hours on Sunday afternoon.
Overnight temperatures on all three days should range between four and six degrees, with daytime temperatures of 21 to 23 degrees.
However, the cool weather should begin to ease back towards May norms by Tuesday.
