Kingaroy State High School is now the proud owner of a painting by Kumbia artist Jenny Gemmell, thanks to the community spirit of 19 students.

The high school students – along with TAFE hospitality student Amy Steele – all volunteered to help out at a joint Kingaroy Rotary / Kingaroy Police charity dinner held at Kingaroy Town Hall in March, waiting on tables and serving meals.

The dinner, which was attended by almost 260 people, marked Kingaroy Rotary Past-President Wayne Bushell’s retirement as Police Prosecutor and raised an impressive $8225.60 for Australian Rotary Health’s “Lift the Lid” mental health program.

At Tuesday’s school assembly, Wayne and Senior Constable Samantha Giles presented certificates of appreciation to the students and thanked them for their help.

They also presented the painting to KSHS Principal Ashley Roediger to add to the high school’s growing collection of South Burnett artworks.

Unfortunately, almost half the students who had helped out at the dinner were at Kingaroy Town Hall on Tuesday morning competing in this year’s Eisteddfod, but school officials will deliver their certificates when they return to class.

Wayne said the students had been an invaluable help on the night, and their work would now help others through Rotary’s mental health initiatives.

The students who assisted at the dinner were Emily Hutton, Cohen Treloar, Lize Potgieter, Lucas Ladyman, Ashleigh Lindsay, Taylah Favier, Emma Hilsley, Rashida Scott, Jennifer Slabber, Kamorl Petersen, Leigh Snape, Aaliyah Tunstall, Chloee Chimes, Jennifer Humphries, Seth Schuback, Remy Favier, Bridie Prendergast, Bree-Anna Olsen and Maddison Baldwin.
