Gympie Regional Council will suspend all volunteer activities in an effort to safeguard health and help contain the spread of COVID-19.

GRC issued a statement on Saturday morning that said the Council would end all volunteering activities at libraries and the Gympie Regional Gallery, and close Gympie’s Visitor Information Centre (VIC) from Monday.

A Council spokesperson said the library and gallery will keep their usual opening hours, but all upcoming events have been cancelled.

The council will also introduce a “call and collect” service at the Visitor Information Centre (VIC).

The service will allow visitors to phone through queries about a location, accommodation or activity to 1800-444-222.

A council staff member will then gather information, flyers and brochures and have them ready for collection through one of the VIC’s windows.

The new service will be available from 10:00am to 3:00pm Mondays to Fridays, and 10:00am to 2:00pm on weekends, and will operate until further notice.

The VIC will also leave copies of their most popular brochures and flyers outside the building so information can be accessible outside those hours.

GRC CEO Bernard Smith said the actions were being taken to avoid putting Council staff and volunteers at risk.
