FLASHBACK: Peter and Marg Enkelmann on their Silverleaf farm after flooding washed away most of the topsoil in 2013; it took them several years to recover from the setback

The Queensland Rural, Regional and Remote Women’s Network (QRRRWN) will be hosting a Christmas party on Saturday, December 2, to thank a Brisbane-based organisation that helped many South Burnett residents during the 2011 and 2013 floods.

Marg Enkelmann from the QRRRWN’s Barambah branch said the branch had chosen the Michelton-based Downs and West Community Support organisation because the support group had been so helpful to local women.

Downs and West Community Support was established in 2007 as a ministry of the Sisters Of Charity.

Its initial aim was to provide assistance to people undergoing hardship due to drought, but this was soon extended to providing assistance to people who were isolated and failed to receive adequate financial support from the Government.

Marg, whose family farm at Silverleaf was turned into a moonscape after the 2013 floods washed away most of the topsoil, was one of many locals who received assistance from the group, and has never forgotten it.

The Barambah Branch will host a Christmas party at the Wondai Diggers Club from 11:00am to 2:00pm on Saturday, December 2 to raise money for DWCS as a way of thanking them for their help during the flood crises.

Apart from a traditional Yuletide lunch, there will also be a Wearable Art fashion show and a guest speaker.

Tickets are $30 per head and can be booked online, or by phoning 0418-689-728.
