The Federal Government will begin holding community consultations in the Wide Bay-Burnett in the next few months as part of a $20 million regional jobs package promised by Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien.

RDA Wide Bay Burnett (RDA) said on Thursday the aim of the consultations was to help the Government get a better understanding of what was happening in the region right now.

Wide Bay-Burnett is one of nine Australian regions which have been promised a share of the Federal Government’s $200 million Regional Jobs and Investment Package.

The others are Queensland’s Bowen Basin; NSW’s North Coast and South Coast regions; the Goulburn Valley; Cairns; Geelong; regional Tasmania; and the Upper Spencer Gulf.

All nine regions have been impacted by the slowdown in mining, falling commodity prices and changes to the manufacturing sector, but have potential for growth.

The aim of the package is to support regional communities by diversifying their economies, creating new business and innovation opportunities, and helping boost the number of jobs available, RDA said.

The Wide Bay Burnett Jobs Package is expected to attract matching funding from participating businesses.

Grants from the package will enable businesses to diversify their operations, support infrastructure projects, and invest in skills development and training programs.

Information about the package can be found on the Department Of Regional Development’s website
