Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington is encouraging community groups to apply for funding announced this week for events and projects to mark the centenary of the World War I.

Mrs Frecklington said the Queensland Anzac Centenary Grants Program would provide individual project funding of up to $80,000 for local projects to commemorate the centenary of the First World War between 2014-18.

“This is one of the most significant anniversaries of modern times, and we want to give every community the opportunity to commemorate it in a way that’s most meaningful to them,” Mrs Frecklington said.

“The Queensland Government is seeking proposals from community groups who want to get involved in commemorative projects and activities to honour the Anzac spirit in their local community.

“We are looking for projects and events that commemorate our past, and which will provide a legacy into the future.

“While many young Queenslanders lost their lives on the battlefields of Europe, there were many other Queenslanders who served the war effort with support roles on home soil. These contributions should also be remembered during this time of commemoration.

“Applications for the first round of grants will close in March next year but there will be further funding rounds through the duration of the centenary period.”

The $13.5 million community grants program was announced by the Minister Assisting the Premier on Veterans Affairs Glen Elmes as part of $49.3 million in overall State Government funding for the centenary.

Mrs Freckling said that more information and application details for the grants could be obtained through her office on (07) 4162-1381 or by visiting the Anzac Centenary website
