On your marks … get ready, set, fly!!

May 23, 2012

We’re used to seeing the AGL Action Rescue Helicopters when there’s been an accident or disaster, so it’s nice to the guys from the Sunshine Coast having a bit of fun instead.

The AGL Chopper challenged a Proton rally car to a runway duel at the Sunshine Coast Airport this morning in the third annual “Chopper Chase”.

The event began two years ago. The Proton took line honours in 2010 and the helicopter claimed victory in 2011.

Unfortunately for the rescue squad – and AGL Action Rescue Helicopter Chief Pilot Brent Chamberlain who was at the controls – the Proton took the chequered flag again today, but it was no walkover.

The Proton took out the first heat, the helicopter had line honours in the second but the Proton just nosed ahead in the final.

The best-of-three challenge helped to launch the 2012 International Rally of Queensland.

Note: The AGL Chopper remained on call during the event, and if there had been a rescue or medical emergency, it would have been back to business as usual!
