NAIDOC Week Celebrations - Kingaroy
NAIDOC week will be held from July 7-14 this year, and Kingaroy will be starting early with its annual NAIDOC Week celebrations, which are being organised by the South Burnett Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation in conjunction with the South Burnett Regional Council this year. NAIDOC Week celebrates Indigenous arts and culture and the unique and important role they play in Australia's identity. The celebrations will be held at Memorial Park in Haly Street, Kingaroy from 9:00am to 3:00pm today and will feature a Welcome To Country, Aboriginal dancers and performers, a Junior Talent Quest (at 11:00am), information stands, and arts, crafts and food stalls. The Fitzgerald Inquiry 30 Years On - Kingaroy
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Fitzgerald Inquiry into the Queensland Government and police corruption, an explosive report that changed the complexion of the state forever and led to the introduction of major changes aimed at improving good governance and transparency, and stamping out corruption. The Kingaroy Regional Art Gallery in Haly Street, Kingaroy (opposite the peanut silos) will be officially opening the second month of its two-month Queensland Winter Craft Festival at 6:00pm this evening. This month the gallery will be featuring silk painting from Cecile Arndt; a very large exhibition of textile art from the Tangled Threads Textile Art Group; and a display of woodworking, wood turning and gestones from South Burnett woodcraft and gemstone groups. Byte Nite - Murgon
The South Burnett PCYC in Macalister Street, Murgon will be hosting a Byte Nite from 7:00pm to around 11:00pm tonight for Murgon and Cherbourg youngsters. Children can play a range of fun and entertaining games and pursue other amusements for free during the course of the night, as well as get a free meal and a ride home afterwards if they need one, all under the supervision of caring local volunteers. Carroll Park Nature Reserve Clean-Up - Kingaroy
Bunya Valley Landcare, the Kingaroy branch of Native Plants Queensland and the South Burnett Field Naturalists will be holding a community clean-up of the Carroll Nature Reserve in Coral Street, Kingaroy today. Volunteers who'd like to join in a spot of helping to weed out asparagus fern, cats claw creeper and basket asparagus (which are three invasive plant species threatening the reserve) should bring along gloves, a hat, protective clothing, covered shoes, water, lunch snacks and a chair (if needed). A mattock and/or a bucket would also be helpful, but several mattocks will be available for everyone's use. Activities will get underway at 8:30am.

Saturday AFL - Kingaroy
The South Burnett Saints will be playing South Toowoomba's Bombers in a double header at Lyle Vidler Oval next to Beangrowers in Youngman Street, Kingaroy at 12:30pm today. The South Burnett's annual Mini Mods rugby league carnival will be held at the Wondai Sportsgrounds on the Bunya Highway in Wondai today. This carnival always attracts hundreds of junior players from all over the Wide-Bay Burnett (600 are expected this year) and matches will start at 8:30am and continue through until the late afternoon, with separate games being played across multiple fields. Stonehouse Tours - Moore
If you're visiting Moore today for the markets or the BVRT Moonlight Bike Ride (see entries further above), you can also take the rare opportunity to tour Moore Stonehouse, the historic coach house complex that once serviced passengers making the long journey up the Brisbane Valley to the South Burnett. The 14th round of the South Burnett's local soccer competition will be played in Nanango and Kingaroy this afternoon. The South Burnett Musical Comedy Society's production of the all-time classic "The Sound Of Music" will be having its third performance at the Kingaroy Performing Arts Centre at the end of Markwell Street, Kingaroy at 2:00pm this afternoon, and it will be a "singalong" one (think: karaoke). Queensland Winter Craft Festival - Kingaroy
The second (and final) month of the Queensland Winter Craft Festival will be running throughout July at the Kingaroy Regional Art Gallery in Haly Street, Kingaroy (opposite the peanut silos) from 10:00am to 4:00pm today. The Gallery is hosting exhibitions from the Tangled Threads Textile Art Group, the South Burnett Gem and Fossicking Club and silk artist Cecile Arndt this month, and it will also be running a number of art workshops covering everything from rug making and silk painting to pottery and creating bags from rags. Rising Stars Playgroup - Yarraman
The Yarraman Rising Stars Playgroup will be meeting at the Yarraman P9 State School Meeting Room between 8:45am and 10:30am this morning. Children involved in the playgroup will get to enjoy a morning of indoor and outdoor play and fun; develop pre-reading and pre-writing skills; form strong relationships with other children; and transition to school more smoothly.
