New Year's Day Seafood Platter Lunch - Wondai
Dimities Cottage at 49 Haly Street, Wondai will be holding an all-you-can-eat New Year's Day Seafood Platter Lunch from noon to 2:00pm today. The $35 per head lunch will feature a great assortment of freshly-caught seafoods straight from the coast, along with non-seafood options for those who prefer them, plus desserts, tea, coffee and soft drinks (guests are also welcome to BYO). Yarraman New Year's Day Festival
Yarraman will be ringing in the New Year with a four-hour News Years Day Festival at the Errol Munt Recreation Grounds off the New England Highway just west of the CBD from 5:00pm until 9:00pm this evening. The Festival will feature lots of great family fun including live music; market stalls; a licensed bar; hot food and beverages; and a range of inexpensive amusement rides for children including jumping castles, a slide, a climbing rock wall and dodgem cars (rides are $10 for 5 rides or $20 for an unlimited rides armband). Fire-fighting superhero Blazer The Bear will be putting in an appearance at 6:00pm too. The Festival is run by the Yarraman Progress Association and co-sponsored by Toowoomba Regional Council. Everyone is welcome and admission is free!

Tom Curtain In Concert - Kumbia
Multiple Golden Guitar winner and horseman extraordinaire Tom Curtain will be bringing his Katherine Outback Experience Tour to the Kumbia race course at 8902 Bunya Highway, Kumbia from 6:00pm to 8:30pm this evening (gates open at 5:30pm). The show will feature a one-hour KOE Show with horses and dogs, followed by a 30 minute intermission with live music from special guests, and then an hour of live music by Tom and guests, featuring both old favourites and new numbers from his recently released 4th album. A cash bar and food will also be available onsite, but BYO is not permitted. Tickets are $30 for adults or $15 for students aged 5-17 (under-5s are free) if booked online in advance, or $40 and $25 if purchased at the gate tonight.

Nanango Country Markets
The Nanango Show Society will be holding their regular monthly Country Markets at the Nanango Showgrounds in Cairns Street from 6:00am to around 12:00 noon today. As usual, the markets will feature a wide variety of craft stalls, new and used goods, plants, poultry and pets. The Nanango Markets are the largest rural market in south east Queensland and attract up to 420 stallholders. But new stallholders are always very welcome too! More info? Nanango Parkrun
The Nanango parkrun group will be holding its weekly 5km timed walk/run along the Ros Gregor Trail at Tipperary Flat next to the D'Aguilar Highway south of Nanango at 7:00am this morning. Runners follow a course along the trail and the parkrun group is free to join. All you need to do is register (once) online at parkrun.com.au and bring the printed barcode to any parkrun event (search for "Ros Gregor Trail" to find the group - but if you can't find it, just register and bring along the barcode).

Dance - Inverlaw Hall
A dance will be held at Inverlaw Hall on the Burrandowan Road (roughly 20km from Kingaroy) from 8:00pm until late this evening. Music will be supplied by Shades Of Country and there'll be the usual great supper and novelties, along with a Lucky Door draw. Annual Bell Race Day
The Bell Race Club will be holding its annual Race Day at the Bell racecourse at 404 Maxwell Street, Bell from 10:00am this morning until late tonight. Due to very dry conditions at the track, the usual five races at this meeting were cancelled by Racing Queensland on Wednesday this week, but the day will be going ahead as usual with phantom races instead. Other features of the Race Day such as a Fashions Of The Field competition, entertainment for children, a licensed bar and food outlets will all be running, along with great post-race entertainment in the evening. Entry fees are $10 per head (or $20 for a family pass) and everyone is welcome!

Wondai Parkrun
The Wondai parkrun group will be holding their weekly 5km timed run at Coronation Park in Wondai at 7:00am this morning. Runners follow a course along the South Burnett Rail Trail and the parkrun group is free to join. Today is Australia Day, a national public holiday (which will be taken tomorrow because Australia Day falls on a Sunday this year). Australia Day marks the date in 1788 when Captain Arthur Philip raised the British flag at Port Jackson near the present-day site of Sydney and became Governor of the new British colony of New South Wales. Australia Day used to be called Foundation Day until the name was changed in 1946, but since then it's grown to become one of our key national celebrations. It's also traditionally the day when our nation hands out Australia Day Awards to outstanding citizens who've made significant contributions to the country and/or their communities. Here's your guide to what's happening around our region today:

Australia Day BBQ - Maidenwell

Australia Day Celebrations - Kingaroy
Kingaroy's Australia's Day celebrations will be held at the Kingaroy Showgrounds in Youngman Street this morning, kicking off with a free sausage sizzle prepared by the Kingaroy Lions at 7:00am, along with scones and damper from Kingaroy Quota and the QCWA. This will be followed with a range of family fun activities including face painting and a jumping castle for children; bush poetry; and a Cooee Competition. At 9:00am, a Flag Raising Ceremony will be performed by the 135 Army Cadet unit, and this will be followed by a citizenship ceremony, an affirmation and the National Anthem along with performances from Julee-Anne Bell and other musical entertainment. The announcement of Kingaroy's Australia Day Award winners will be followed by the traditional pie and lamington eating competitions, along with an all new thong throwing competition, finishing with a multi raffle draw at about 10:50am. During the morning guests will also be able to see some of the speedway cars which will be racing in the Kings Royal Australia Day Weekend races. Everyone is welcome!

Australia Day Buffet - Wondai
Dimities Cottage in Haly Street, Wondai (opposite the Wondai Art Gallery) will be hosting an Australia Day Buffet Lunch from noon to 2:00pm today. Australia Day At Boondooma Homestead
Historic Boondooma Homestead on the Durong-Mundubbera Road at Boondooma will be hosting an Australia Day celebration from 5:00pm this evening. Activities will kick off with a flag-raising ceremony and this will be followed by a BBQ dinner. A bus will be running from Murgon on the day (picking up at Wondai, Hivesville and Proston) but you'll need to pre-book a seat by phoning the Proston Country Bus Service on (07) 4168-9296, who'll advise you of the timetable.

Hivesville Country Markets
The Hivesville Country Markets will be held at the Hivesville Sports Grounds from 7:00am to around 1:00pm today. These family friendly monthly markets are held on the 4th Sunday of every month and feature a variety of stalls including fresh local farm produce, plants, crafts and lots of food. There'll also be mini auctions running throughout the morning and there's plenty of free parking in the grounds. Australia Day BBQ Lunch - Wondai

South Burnett Speedway - Kingaroy
The third day of the three-day Kings Royal, the biggest annual event on the South Burnett Speedway calendar, will be held at Kingaroy Showgrounds tonight. Racing will get underway at 4:00pm and this year a bumper field of top drivers have nominated. Tonight's program will feature the finals of the IBRP Kings Royal Modified Sedans, along with heats and finals of Junior Sedans and heats and finals for the womens-only Queens Royal event. Admission is $25 for adults, $15 for students (with ID) and aged or disability pensioners and $65 for a family of two adults and up to three students (children 12 and under are free). Australia Day Public Holiday
Because Australia Day fell on Sunday this year, today is a public holiday and most South Burnett businesses will either be closed or operating on restricted hours. Traffic will also be a bit higher than usual on our region's main roads as people return from their holidays - particularly from late afternoon onwards - so you should drive with caution. And if you're thinking of attending a group activity today, it may be wise to phone them in advance to determine if they're still holding a meeting or not. Some groups do meet on public holidays, but some don't.

Murgon SES Training Night

A meeting to introduce the new Visit South Burnett local tourism organisation will be held at Blackbutt RSL at the corner of Muir and Douglas Streets, Blackbutt from 5:30pm to 6:30pm this evening. Visit South Burnett are a new grassroots organisation of local tourism operators working in partnership with the South Burnett Regional Council to revamp tourism marketing, and the meetings will allow local tourism operators to hear and discuss VSB's plans and join the organisation if they wish. Back To School
The first term of the 2020 school year begins today and all school-age children attending State schools are required to return to class this morning. The South Burnett Pantry will be open from 8:30am to 12:30pm today at 22 Stolzenberg Road in Kingaroy. The Pantry is a not-for-profit registered charity run by a Board of Management and staffed by volunteers, and it helps low income families, couples and singles stretch their shopping dollar further. The Pantry offers $40 pantry hampers that contain most of the food and personal cleaning items that most people need to get through part of the week (though you'll need to shop elsewhere for extras or special items).
